“On the morning of July 11, 2024, the Faculty of Economics at the National Economics University, in collaboration with Boise State University (BSU), USA, organized a scientific workshop titled ‘Internationalization of Higher Education: Best Practices in Research and Student Exchange Programs in Business and Economics.’”

The workshop attracted significant interest from experts and scholars both domestically and internationally.

Attending the workshop, from external organizations, were: Marc E. Knapper – U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam; Dr. Marlene Tromp – President of Boise State University; Dr. Mark Bannister – Dean of the College of Business and Economics, Boise State University; along with other experts and scientists from Vietnam and abroad.

From the National Economics University, attendees included: Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong – President; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho – Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the University Council; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong – Vice President; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham The Anh – Dean of the Faculty of Economics; along with representatives of socio-political organizations within the university, leaders of member schools, and heads of departments, divisions, faculties, and institutes, as well as faculty members and students of the Faculty of Economics.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu – Vice President of the National Economics University – delivered a speech.

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu, Vice President, stated that Boise State University, USA, has been a long-standing strategic partner of the National Economics University since 1993. Many alumni who were lecturers and staff of the National Economics University now hold key leadership positions within the university as well as successful entrepreneurs in Vietnam, and have participated in the Master of Business Administration program at Boise State University.

He also emphasized that the strong trend of globalization worldwide is placing increasing pressure on higher education institutions, requiring universities to improve the quality of their training programs to meet demands for strong professional expertise, foreign language proficiency, and international experience. This pressure has compelled universities to accelerate the process of internationalization, with two key pillars being the promotion of international student exchange and research collaboration.

Vietnam is also undergoing deep integration into the global economy. Therefore, the country’s higher education system is striving to keep pace with domestic development and international integration. At the same time, Vietnam faces various challenges such as middle-to-low income levels, limited competitiveness, and particularly a low proportion of skilled labor in the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a result, Vietnam’s higher education system in general, and the National Economics University in particular, needs to transform toward internationalization to enhance the quality of teaching, learning, and research—not only to train high-quality human resources but also to promote comprehensive internationalization activities. Furthermore, the internationalization of higher education has contributed and continues to contribute to improving quality, enriching global learning experiences, and advancing the integration of Vietnam’s higher education into the regional and global landscape, thereby creating more career opportunities for students.

Through the workshop, the Vice President expressed his hope to broaden understanding of the dynamic context of higher education internationalization in Vietnam and other countries, and to provide practical insights into best practices in cooperation among universities, the private sector, and public organizations in research, as well as collaboration among universities in student exchange programs, through valuable contributions from experts of both institutions.
